We’re celebrating six weeks open at our new location and are thrilled that our loyal customers have found their way home and we’re excited to keep welcoming new customers who “didn’t even know Edwardsville had an independent book store.” Leaving the security blanket of our little nook downtown was a bold move on our part but it seems we were correct in our assessment that there are still lots and lots of families in the metro-east area who just don’t venture downtown. To them, we say, it’s a crying shame! So many great, unique, businesses and restaurants populate our downtown ( Cleveland Heath, Bigelos Bistro, 222 Artisan Bakery, Sacred Grounds Cafe, Lost Arts and Antiques, The Wildey Theatre, and newcomers like Plowsharing Crafts to name a few- many more, too many to mention!) you should take the time to venture off the beaten path and check them out!
So, the new location? Better visibility? Check. Designated parking for our customers? Work in progress, but, yes, check. Charm, coziness factor, warmth, accessibility? Lots of check. We’re still settling into our new home and want to thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to stop in and welcome us to the neighborhood. Each time you tell us how happy you are to have a hometown bookstore, we are filled with pride and encouraged to keep making your shop better and better.
Thank you, Michelle, for the awesome sign in our “garden.” You are an incredibly talented artist! Now we just need an incredibly talented landscaper to do the sign it’s proper justice.
We need not have worried that our families would not continue to join us for our complimentary Saturday morning story times at 11am- still going strong! So much so, that we’ve offered a Tuesday morning session at 10am that finds us welcoming lots of guests, both old and new. These hours spent planning story time themes and sharing our favorite books with you and your children prove to be our most rewarding. Please know how much we appreciate you sharing this time with us, for getting everyone fed, dressed, in the car seat (no easy task!) and here week after week.
The Trade for Credit Program remains popular as more and more people spread the word that we happily accept gently used books in exchange for store credit! Did you know that Afterwords is on Pinterest? You can keep up to date on our new arrivals as we’re always updating with the average of 100+ titles received each week:
New Arrivals Our first Family Fun Night proved to be a success! We had a great time sharing stories about pizza and creating (and eating!) our very own personal pizzas. Hope you can join us on July 30th for a popcorn themed story time when we’ll be sharing freshly popped popcorn and making some fun take-home crafts. You can register by clicking here! We are super excited for upcoming Family Fun Nights in the works: So Long Summer on August 13th will find us celebrating a last hurrah of all things summer with stories, super-fun crafts, and a certain frozen treat! In September, we look forward to welcoming Ms. Lia of Smock Paper Scissors Art Academy for an evening of art-inspired stories, snacks, and a fabulous take-home art project! In October, we invite you to join us for a viewing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” and to enjoy all the fixings of our candied apple bar. Stay tuned for dates and future events!
As the summer winds down, you may hear the dreaded “I’m bored” from the younger crew. For those of you who have yet to hear it, we applaud you. For the rest of you, we commiserate. We’re offering a buy two, get one FREE deal on our entire inventory of MELISSA & DOUG goodies (also known as boredom busters!) for all of July and August. Just mention that you read it on our blog, and we’ll hook you up!
For you bored grown-ups, we say who are you?? We invite you to join us for Documentary Club and/or a session of book club as it always promises titillating conversation, good company, and spirits and nibbles will be on hand! No need to RSVP, just check our upcoming events calendar and drop by!
With another six weeks (give or take) of summertime left, we hope you’ll find time to stop in and visit, peruse the shelves, pick up a book from the 100+ FREE offerings on our front porch, share your vacation photos, tell us about your favorite beach/pool reads, and give us that potato salad recipe you keep telling us is to die for.
