When I bought the bookstore nearly two years ago, I was met with many a raised brow and cautioned that the days of the book were numbered. Wasn’t I worried about eReaders? With more and more readers turning on their Kindles and Nooks, what would that mean for all the secondhand paperbacks and hardcovers on our shelves?
I waxed poetic here as to why I was not in the least bit concerned and charged full speed ahead. I am still a hopeless romantic, but I cannot deny the significant drop in our sales over the past year and recognize how that coincides with many of our customers receiving shiny new gadgets Christmas before last.
We’re currently searching for a new home for our little book store, one that will still allow us to offer our visitors a relaxing, inviting atmosphere while reducing our overhead and provide us the opportunity to continue to build our community.
Imagining our new space, I concede that we will have to surrender some of the current genres we currently shelve. Our new nest will house first and foremost, children’s books. It’s no secret that I have a passion for children’s literature and am very proud and enthusiastic of our Saturday story time! There are plans for more children’s programming and an even better space for families to enjoy books together.
We’ll also make room for YA titles, graphic novels, cookbooks, art, science, philosophy, and history titles, and, of course, poetry and the classics. We will still carry fiction titles that are recently published and/or award-winning books. You’ll still find a great selection of MELISSA & DOUG goodies, handmade cards, bookmarks, and journals created by local artists, and some new surprises as well!
Our Trade for Credit Program will still be going strong and all current store credit will continue to be honored. That said, going forward we will only be able to accept gently loved books from the genres mentioned above.
I hope you share our excitement and you’ll definitely be kept posted as to when the move will take place! In the meantime, we’re hosting a moving sale, offering all paperbacks and hardcovers in stock at 50% off! (excludes genres that we’re carrying to our new space!)
